After Aaron Rodgers' decision to not only return to the NFL but also re-sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers, former Penn State quarterback Drew Allar's chances of starting went down drastically.
Just a few days ago, some thought there was a possibility that Allar could be the starter for the Steelers, depending on what Rodgers decided to do.
Now, there seems to be more of a question about what the Steelers are going to do with their four quarterbacks, and whether moving on from somebody like the former Penn State star already could be a possibility.
Despite that reality, a USA Today writer doesn't seem to believe that's going to play out.
“Rodgers, who is a guaranteed starter, won't be getting his pink slip. Neither will Allar, who was just selected with pick No. 76 overall in the 2026 NFL Draft. That leaves Rudolph, who some Steelers insiders believe still holds value as the team's top backup QB, or Howard, who was regarded as a potential starting option this season. Here's the thing: Rudolph offers the Steelers more value as a potential late-Day 3 trade asset than he does as a backup. Howard could step into that role in 2026 and is expected to compete with Allar for the starting quarterback job in 2027.
“While some have suggested the Steelers decide to keep four quarterbacks on the roster or even place Howard on the practice squad, Rudolph seems like the much more likely odd man out if Pittsburgh believes the future already lies with their two young signal callers,” Andrew Vasquez of Steelers Wire wrote.
After just being drafted, he definitely has a good chance of staying on the roster for at least the short term.
Plus, there are a lot of reasons to think that Allar and the Steelers will have a decent little relationship in the long term, and signing Rodgers can actually be the reason why. Allar has a lot to learn in the NFL from a developmental standpoint, and there's no one better to help him do that than the future Hall of Famer and one of the greatest of all time.
