The biggest question that Penn State quarterback Drew Allar is going to have to answer is whether he can develop at the level everybody expects him to in the NFL. For the Pittsburgh Steelers, that question is just as important as anything for their future, as there's a hope and feeling that he can eventually be the franchise guy in Pittsburgh.
Of course, Allar hasn't shown anything to suggest that he can be a franchise guy in the NFL as early as next season. In fact, there are still more questions than answers about him because of his lack of development during his time at Penn State.
Everybody loves his tools, but if those tools don't develop to the level everybody wants, and he doesn't do what's needed to keep improving, there isn't much to talk about here. He would continue to be a raw player who doesn't have much of a future in the league.
However, according to the Steelers' offensive coordinator, the Penn State quarterback has been impressing him with his attitude on and off the field. It sounds like Allar really wants to improve, and there's something to be said about that.
“Drew, I really like his mindset and his approach, and how he’s going about his daily business. Certainly, in the NFL, the footwork is a little bit more under center. So, we’ll continue to work on his footwork under center, but I think just the training, how we teach progressions, how we want the feet to look to tie him up with the routes and the rhythm in the passing game, like with all our guys. I mean, some of it’s a little bit new for all of them,” Brian Angelichio said, per PennLive.
Allar has even admitted in the past that he needs to get better. Not all rookie quarterbacks come in with a great mindset, but the youngster definitely seems to know what it takes for him to become the player he's looking to be in this league. Whether that be fixing small things, changing up major things, or anything in between, things have to be fixed here, and if they aren't, his future in the NFL definitely won't be as bright as we're all hoping for.
“It’s really just about tweaking things,” Allar said after rookie minicamp practice. “There’s a lot of different philosophies. Every coach probably teaches footwork a little bit different and with Coach McCarthy, he has his beliefs. They’ve shown they work very well with who he has been around. It’s about me buying into that and getting it as consistent as possible. With all the QBs he’s worked with, they’ve had a tremendous amount of success. But I have to start from the ground up.”
