Throughout the NFL draft process, there was reason to believe that Penn State quarterback Drew Allar would do a very good job in a lot of his meetings.
It still remains uncertain how teams viewed him throughout some of that draft process, as he fell to the third round to the Pittsburgh Steelers, but it sounds like he had some fun during his interview with Mike McCarthy and Pittsburgh.
We can look back at many of the past few years and suggest that others likely would have wanted to change things, perhaps even some stuff in the draft process. However, it's over with, and all he can think about is doing what's right for the future and looking back at the decisions he made with the Pittsburgh staff.
One of those was a mental test with McCarthy, which Allar said was very difficult and kept him on his toes. He said that he had a lot of fun with it and that it was probably the hardest meeting he had with any team.
“It’s very-detailed, fast-paced, and it keeps you on your toes,” Allar said to the team, per PennLive. “It was honestly really fun. That’s what I live for, those kind of conversations, learning as much football as possible and obviously trying to pick up on what Coach McCarthy calls certain things and his terminology as much as I could. It was probably the hardest meeting I had of my formals.”
In this draft process, it wasn't too surprising to see that Allar continued to stay where many expected him to be drafted, which was around the second and third rounds. He was once viewed as a first-round pick, but after last season and his injury, it was all but guaranteed that he was going to be a rather late-round pick.
Regardless, the Steelers believe that they can fix his footwork. If his mental side is as strong as the Steelers likely think it is after that assessment, he should be in a really good spot.
“With third-round quarterback Drew Allar, the Steelers are betting big on coach Mike McCarthy’s quarterback development to fix Allar’s footwork. “He’s really got a good feel for what that takes,” a team source said of McCarthy’s touch in this area. Pittsburgh believes Allar has similar arm talent to a young Joe Flacco,” Jeremy Fowler wrote.
