This season, the Pittsburgh Steelers' goal should be to compete at a very high level. If it's not, there really isn't much reason they brought back Aaron Rodgers. That's certainly going to have an impact on former Penn State quarterback Drew Allar, as there really isn't much expectation that he'll have a chance to play much.

If Rodgers were to deal with an injury, it would make sense for the Steelers to at least give him or Will Howard a look, but it remains uncertain what the organization would do in that scenario.

As we've seen in the past, teams often don't give the keys to questionable rookie quarterbacks and will instead go out and find a guy who can come in for however many weeks to do the job.

However, a writer for the Steelers raised a very interesting point. His comment was that while the Steelers are looking to win, they almost need to know whether they have something with Allar or Howard.

“What I believe the Steelers want is to compete in 2026, and as for the QB position in particular they would like to have some idea of what kind of future Will Howard and/or Drew Allar have in the NFL. And that evaluation of Howard and Allar already has started. As for "having a leg up" there must be some kind of order when it comes to taking the field during practices because it's efficient, but don't take that to mean there already is a favorite. Training camp is going to be very interesting this summer when it comes to that position, and the preseason games will really bring the picture into focus,” Bob Labriola of Steelers.com wrote.

Labriola said it best, as evaluating both of these quarterbacks has to be at the top of the priority list. The last thing the Steelers want to do is enter next year's NFL Draft without knowing what Allar or Howard is as a player.

Whether that means they get thrown into the fire during practice or even see some game time here and there, the organization has to know what they're looking for, and hopefully, Allar will take advantage of those opportunities.
