As of Monday, June 15th, the 2028 recruiting class has officially opened, and it is going to be a major one for the Penn State Nittany Lions.
So much is going to change between now and when this class officially takes the field for the Nittany Lions, but what it will signal is how the new perception of the program is within the actual ecosystem.
It's been a turbulent 12 months for the Nittany Lions, but it does really feel like they have officially turned the page as a program and have set their sights on the future. That story will further color itself in once the football games begin in the fall.
Matt Campbell has proven that he can build a culture and recruit his tail off, but he hasn't proven that he can win with a program that isn't in the MAC. Campbell was incredibly successful at Toledo before taking over an Iowa State program that was in the cellar of the Big 12. He turned that program around, but over his entire body of work over 10 years, he proved to be an above-average coach.
Now, he takes on a challenge in Happy Valley that is immense. He is replacing a guy that become a very polarizing figure in Penn State lore as he won football games but never competed at the top of the Big Ten, but always did enough to stick around.
For Penn State fans, winning regular games simply isn't enough. The bar that Campbell has to clear is to be competitive and win against the Ohio States, the Oregons, the Indianas, and everyone else at the top of the conference.
If they can do that, the recruiting begins to largely take care of itself.
Campbell immediately made the 2026 class a very formidable one, as it is a Top-10-ranked class in the entire country. He and the program now sit at a fork in the road. When the ball is teed up in the fall, it can go one of two ways.
If they start winning football games, it will be gasoline on the fire. The top recruits will start rolling in for not only 2026 but 2027 and 2028. If they aren't able to win games, then all of the goodwill will fall apart.
For the 2028 class, which will become a very important class for the longevity of Penn State Football. The recruiting officially began on Monday, and may the best program win.
