He was what he was.
The perception that Penn State is a certain team this year is more than fair, but people saying the university shouldn't have moved on from head coach James Franklin just seems a bit ridiculous.
As I've said in the past, I don't mind moving on from Franklin. The problem for Penn State was that it had to realize that moving on from a head coach doesn't automatically mean it would find the same type of success it had with Franklin.
Franklin was a very good coach for what he was, but it was obvious that Penn State couldn't win the big games with him as its head coach.
The harsh reality is that every time Penn State played a big game during his tenure, it typically resulted in a loss. As Penn State figured out last year, enough was enough.
Again, that doesn't mean hiring head coach Matt Campbell was the right decision or that other decisions shouldn't have been made, but moving on from Franklin and trying to say what he's doing in the ACC right now should bother Penn State is a tad ridiculous.
Virginia Tech isn't even a top-25 team, and we can say that if it hadn't missed a field goal or anything else, it would be 8-0, but wouldn't that be something similar we could have said about him at Penn State?
“You know what's worse than falling to the bottom of your conference? Watching your long-time former coach, who led you to prolonged success, achieve that with another program. Former Penn State head coach James Franklin has led the Virginia Tech Hokies to a 6-2 record, including a 3-2 record in the ACC. If it weren't for a missed field goal against Pitt and letting Cal get a game-winning drive against them, the Hokies would be 8-0,” Owen Hillman of USA Today wrote.
We're not talking about Kirby Smart or an old Nick Saban here.
It's not like Franklin has earned our trust to win those games.
Those were typical James Franklin losses, and at the end of the day, that's why Penn State decided to get rid of him. We can also go as far as to say that the ACC just isn't comparable to the Big Ten.
Again, that doesn't mean Penn State would dominate the ACC right now, but Virginia Tech has frankly played nobody. Beating teams like Boston College, Georgia Tech, Clemson, and some other conference wins just doesn't really move the needle. Let's see how Virginia Tech looks against No. 1 Miami in a couple of weeks and then start pushing agendas that don't make much sense.
