The Penn State Nittany Lions were expected to be a top-tier national championship contender during the 2025 college football season. Led by star quarterback Drew Allar, the sky was the limit.
Unfortunately, those expectations and hopes quickly unraveled.
Allar went down with a season-ending broken left ankle against the Northwestern Wildcats. That was the game that saw everything change for Penn State.
After losing to Northwestern, the Nittany Lions made the decision to fire head coach James Franklin. With Franklin gone and Allar out for the year, the season was a wash.
Penn State ended up finishing out the season with a 6-6 record. That was good enough to earn a bowl game, where the Nittany Lions will play the Clemson Tigers in the Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl.
Due to the injury and a down season, Allar's value ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft has dropped. He went from being a potential first-round selection to being a likely day two or day three pick.
When all was said and done, Allar completed 64.8 percent of his pass attempts for 1,100 yards, eight touchdowns, and three interceptions in 2025. Back in 2024, he threw for 3,327 yards, 24 touchdowns, and eight interceptions, while completing 66.5 percent of his passes.
Keeping that in mind, Allar has now been connected to an intriguing potential NFL fit.
AtoZ Sports has suggested the Indianapolis Colts as a potential fit for the Penn State signal caller.
"Allar fits what the Colts actually run on offense. Their scheme emphasizes RPOs (Run-Pass Options) that simplify reads and get the ball out quickly. Play-action concepts create easy throws off movement. Boot concepts let a quarterback work within structure rather than carry the offense entirely on his back. He wouldn't need to start immediately or rescue a roster. He'd be asked to learn, develop, and earn his opportunity through practice performance and preseason execution."
Landing with the Colts would be a logical destination for Allar. That destination would also give him a chance to learn for a year or two and potentially take over as the starter.
Hopefully, the Nittany Lions star is able to land in a favorable situation. It's a shame how things ended for him at Penn State, but he still has potential for the next level.
