Charlie Baduini and I of Roundtable Penn State met for our third podcast episode of the year, perhaps the biggest one of the year, after James Franklin decided to take the Virginia Tech job.
Baduini had some fair points when it came to Franklin taking the job, despite my initial thinking of it not being the smartest idea from his perspective. As we both looked around the ACC and the challenges, if any, that Franklin would face, we agreed that his path to the College Football Playoff's will be a lot easier in Blacksburg than it was in State College.
With Franklin taking the job, this means Penn State has to be hiring a head coach in the near future, right? Baduini and I examined some names. He likes Eliah Drinkwitz out of Missouri, while I love Bob Chesney from JMU. Both of us agreed that if either coach ended up in Happy Valley, it should be viewed as a success.
One interesting point that Baduini brought up was how Drinkwitz coaches Beau Pribula, giving him some Penn State ties in a sense.
To me, Chesney is the guy because all he's done is win at the highest level. I get it. Salve Regina, Assumption, Holy Cross, and James Madison are all far from elite programs, with Salve Regina and Assumption not even being Division 1 programs, but every coach starts somewhere. Nonetheless, he won at both spots and continued that at the Division 1 level at Holy Cross and JMU.
We looked back to the win against Michigan State, with both of us being rather impressed with what Penn State did. We both understand that the season hasn't gone as planned, but the kids, coaches, alumni, and current student body deserve to see the team win some games.
Looking ahead to Nebraska on Saturday night, we both viewed this as a game Penn State can win due to Dylan Raiola being out. Nebraska is improved, and Matt Rhule has done a good job, but Penn State, as we said, has a lot of talent.
