Penn State QB Drew Allar received some very positive feedback after his strong performance against the Jets.
Former Penn State quarterback Drew Allar is gaining a ton of momentum in his first true month with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Allar entered the NFL as a total wild card, but after just a couple of data points, the hype around him is starting to gain momentum.
On Friday, Allar added some fuel to the fire with his performance against the New York Jets. He wasn't perfect by any means, but he was pretty good, and he absolutely looks the part when it comes to being an NFL quarterback.
Allar's stats were not good at all, as he finished 11-for-23 for 110 yards; there were three dropped passes, and he took three sacks. Again, a lot to improve upon, but still some very positive steps in the right direction.
He has found himself in a pretty intense and important quarterback competition with former Ohio State quarterback Will Howard. Howard was the Steelers' sixth-round draft pick last year and was the prince that was promised after Aaron Rodgers.
That was until Allar burst onto the scene and made his presence felt. Those two are now going head-to-head, competing for the backup position and, more importantly, the inside track for the Steelers' starting quarterback position next year.
On Saturday morning, it was reported out of Pittsburgh that the competition is going to go into the season as both Allar and Howard are expected to make the final 53-man roster.
This isn't all that much of a surprise as both of them have the potential, and Allar certainly was never under any concern about getting cut.
He is confirmed to be on the roster, and for really good reason. The feeling around the Pittsburgh organization is that they have found a diamond in the rough with their fourth-round quarterback selection.
His play so far is certainly indicating that it might be the case, but there is still a ton of work that needs to be done for Allar to firmly defeat Will Howard as the backup quarterback behind Aaron Rodgers.
So far this preseason, Allar has played in two games: the first one against the Green Bay Packers, where he combined for three touchdowns and threw for over 150 yards. The most recent game against the New York Jets showed that he still has a lot of work to do, but he has the type of game that can last.
Next up for Allar is the preseason finally against the Buffalo Bills before the real thing gets started and the regular season is underway.
