Penn State quarterback Drew Allar makes his official pre-draft visit to the Pittsburgh Steelers

In a fascinating turn of events, Penn State quarterback Drew Allar took his official pre-draft visit to western Pennsylvania, where he visited with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Allar, who grew up just 20 minutes south of Pittsburgh's nearest rival, the Cleveland Browns, seems to be a very fitting piece for the Steelers, who are planning on life after Aaron Rodgers, likely after this upcoming season.

For Allar, this makes sense; for the Steelers, this is a little bit of a head scratcher.

In the 2025 NFL Draft, the Steelers selected Ohio State and Kansas State quarterback Will Howard in the sixth round of the draft. The messaging coming out of the building is that Howard has the right mindset, really won over the team, but might struggle with the attributes needed to play quarterback at the NFL level.

Because of that, the Steelers may have their eyes on Allar, who will likely be a third or fourth-round pick.

While Howard potentially doesn't have the tools needed to succeed at the NFL level, Allar simply couldn't be more opposite. Allar has all of the traits required to not only be a good NFL quarterback, but also the traits to be a great one.

He stands at 6'5", he weighs over 240 pounds, he runs well enough to be dangerous, and he has an elite arm.

The only reason that he is expected to drop in the draft is that he struggled in his final season before breaking his ankle. Had he come out after the 2024 year, he would have been a top-10 pick. Because he stayed, his stock dropped, and his wallet is going to pay for it.

Now, the positive is that while he is going to have a lot of developing to do along with a total mechanical overhaul, he should get the opportunity to do it for a top-half of the league team.

The rationale here is that the teams at the bottom of the league likely need a quarterback now, while the teams in the upper echelon have the ability to draft depth at that position, and Allar is absolutely the guy they want.

Allar is a player who can sit for two or three seasons, and then once he is totally fixed and developed, he can slide right in and become a 10-15-year quarterback in the league. I liken him to Jordan Love with a lot more work required.

While I do not think the best place for him is in Pittsburgh, it is where he took his final visit before next week's draft.
