Penn State's running back room has a lot of potential in it, and one of those unproven guys is Quinton Martin Jr.
One of the staples of the Penn State Nittany Lions program is a good running back. The one that obviously stands out amongst the rest is Saquon Barkley, who was one of the best to ever do it.
Some of the others on the list are Franco Harris, Ki-Jana Carter, Curt Warner, and many others. This year, they have a couple of guys who have some potential maybe not to the extent of being the best ever to put on the blue and white, but maybe one of them will be.
One of those guys is Quinton Martin. Martin enters the 2026 season as one of the incumbents in the room who stayed after the mass exodus during this offseason. Joining him in that room are Ohio State transfer James Peoples and Iowa State transfer Carson Hansen.
This will definitely be a position by committee, but for the Nittany Lions, they think they have something in Martin.
Offensive coordinator Taylor Mouser was asked about Martin, and he said, "His athleticism, his size, and what he can do... He did some great stuff on the goal line for us and is one of the better pass-pro guys that we have... when we get to those 10 personnel sets, he allows us to get funky with what we do."
Being versatile is the best way to climb a depth chart, and it is really that simple. If you are a one-trick pony, then you'd better have a really good one trick. If not, it's nearly a requirement that you have to be able to do multiple things.
From the sound of it, there is not only a lot of potential with Martin, but there is a lot of trust in the young player, too.
When a coach goes unprompted to compliment a running back's pass protection, then he is doing something right. A coach will not put a running back on the field who isn't a playmaker and can't protect the passer.
Martin seems to have all of the right tools in his toolbox heading into the season. It is not a situation where he will be the first-down starter in the backfield, but he is going to find himself on the field in critical spots, and his coaches trust him.
The more that a player can do, the better, and Martin seems to have it all. It will be interesting to see how the Nittany Lions use him and what his impact will be next year.
