Penn State's prior regime gets a damning report straight from Pittsburgh rookie minicamp.
The reports out of Pittsburgh so far for Drew Allar are not great. He is getting his opportunity early to get his feet wet, especially during the rookie minicamp, and learn on the fly.
When fall camp comes around, Allar will be in deep development mode because the Steelers reported on Wednesday that the Steelers are basically "uninstalling" everything that he knows about playing quarterback and reuploading his mechanics and fundamentals.
This report came from ESPN's Steelers' beat reporter Brooke Pryor.
Unfortunately for Allar, this is to be expected from Allar's first few weeks in the NFL. Allar has all of the physical tools to be an incredible quarterback in the league, but mechanically, he regressed every single year and, more importantly, never properly developed any part of his game, especially to have what it takes to be an NFL quarterback.
At Penn State, Allar's best season was his junior campaign, where he threw for 3,327 yards and 24 touchdowns. That year ended with a heartbreaking turnover in the National Semifinal game against Notre Dame.
Allar had the opportunity to enter the draft and likely be a first-round pick. Instead, he opted to return to school to chase a national championship.
No one in the entire college football world lost more money last year than Allar. He went from a first-round pick to a 3rd rounder, fighting for his NFL life.
To do that, he is going to have to reimagine himself and his ability to play the quarterback position. The good news is that he is going to do it in a room and environment that is built for him to succeed.
If Aaron Rodgers comes back, he will have a great mentor to teach him how to be the most mechanically sound thrower possible. The coach who built a young Rodgers is, you guessed it, Mike McCarthy, who is now the head man in Pittsburgh.
There is no reason to think that Allar won't take all of the coaching that he gets, and if he does, he truly has the opportunity to become one of the great quarterbacks in the league.
Time will tell, but the real truth is that the prior Penn State regime did him no favors. Thankfully, that will not be the case anymore in Happy Valley.
