The Nittany Lions received some negative recruiting news on Monday, but it didn't come as a surprise.
The Penn State Nittany Lions officially lost out on four-star wide receiver recruit Khalil Taylor to Big Ten rival, the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
Taylor was one of the top recruits in the 2027 class who, after his official visit in the first week of June, indicated that he was leaning heavily towards the Nittany Lions.
As most of the recruiting stories go these days, it is never over until the player has played his final snap at the University. These kids have to constantly be recruited and, truthfully, enticed with money in order to get them to commit and stay.
This was the case for Taylor. Taylor's recruitment never shut down, and to be clear, he never committed to Matt Campbell and the Nittany Lions.
His doors stayed open for Colorado and Nebraska, and both programs continued to chase. The saga came to an end, finally, on Monday when Taylor announced his commitment. With a little disrespect, Taylor grabbed the Penn State hat, fake put it on, and then threw it as far as he could.
He slapped the Cornhusker hat on and shared in the moment with his family. The moment was ultimately a bummer for the Nittany Lions, but it was not a back-breaking decision.
Campbell has gotten the program to such a positive spot where losing out on a four-star receiver is not the end of the world. In years past, losing this type of wide receiver would have been a heartbreaking result.
Penn State has been stuck chasing elite skill players for the better part of the last decade, but this doesn't kill them. The Nittany Lions have assembled a still fairly strong class that is ranked 17th in the country as it stands right now.
As it stands right now, the Nittany Lions have a four-star receiver, tight end, and running back all in the 2027 class. It is far from done, but they have been stacking the elite recruits.
Even though they already have some good players in the bank, the 2027 class for Campbell has the chance to be a legendary one. If the Nittany Lions come out next year winning football games, they will have no problem adding talent to that class.
That is in a perfect world. In that reality, they won't be missing Khalil Taylor all that much.
