College football has to be one of the funniest things in the world, and it’s what makes the sport so great.
For Penn State, amidst its search with BYU head coach Kalani Sitake, many have questioned how likely it is that Penn State will truly land him. Reports indicated that Penn State had extended him an offer and was zeroing in on him, but nothing was signed.
Penn State lost out on another top candidate as Sitake signed an extension with BYU.
And funny enough, part of this outcome might have even been due to a cookie brand, as Crumbl Cookie CEO Jason McGowan took to social media to express his desire to keep his head coach in Utah.
When examining what that might mean, as crazy as it might sound, but he’s right, Robbie Kalland of CBS believes that Penn State found itself in a battle with BYU due to a cookie company.
“Penn State suddenly finds itself battling BYU's various snack food empires in its pursuit of Sitake -- Built Bar CEO Nick Greer is also a BYU alum and donor. We've seen the investment BYU's mega-donors have put into making their basketball team a powerhouse, and now Penn State's interest in Sitake has shifted their focus to the football program.
“There is a reason McGowan called Sitake "not replaceable," and it's not just because he's an excellent football coach. BYU's coaching candidates pool is tiny compared to the rest of college football because the coach has traditionally been a member of the Church of Latter Day Saints (though it's not an official university policy). That eliminates most coaches in the country, and having a proven winner at this level of college football who is part of the church is not something BYU can afford to lose,” he wrote.
We’ll have to see what plays out over the next few days. I’ll go out on a limb and say that in the next 48 hours, we should have an answer on what Penn State is going to do. Thought, it won’t be Sitake.
Penn State, unfortunately, hasn’t left itself any opportunity to not hire a head coach in the next few days. It’s already been a very long search, probably too long, so it will have to figure something out here in the next few days.
