Hall of Fame running back Eric Dickerson inspires SMU graduates, sharing his journey from gridiron greatness to philanthropic impact at Ford Stadium.

Southern Methodist University will welcome back one of its most iconic figures this spring as Eric Dickerson headlines SMU’s May Commencement Convocation on Saturday, May 16.

The ceremony is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT inside Gerald J. Ford Stadium and will be streamed live for those unable to attend in person.

For generations of Mustangs fans, Dickerson’s name is synonymous with excellence.

A centerpiece of SMU’s legendary “Pony Express” from 1979 to 1982, Dickerson helped elevate the program to national prominence while rewriting the school’s rushing record book. His blend of speed, power, and vision made him one of the most dominant backs in college football and set the stage for an extraordinary professional career.

SMU President Jay Hartzell said Dickerson’s journey makes him the perfect voice for graduates preparing to take their next step.

“Eric Dickerson embodies excellence, perseverance and leadership on the field and beyond,” Hartzell said. “His story shows what’s possible when talent is paired with discipline and purpose.”

After leaving the Hilltop, Dickerson carried that same standard into the NFL, where he starred for 11 seasons with the Los Angeles Rams, Indianapolis Colts, Los Angeles Raiders, and Atlanta Falcons. He remains the NFL’s single-season rushing record holder with 2,105 yards in 1984 and finished his career with 13,259 rushing yards, ranking among the league’s all-time greats.

His accomplishments earned him induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1999, cementing his legacy as one of the most impactful running backs the game has ever seen.

Dickerson’s influence, however, extends well beyond football.

Through the Eric Dickerson Foundation, he has focused on creating opportunities for underserved youth, particularly in education. The Eric Dickerson Learning Center in Fort Worth provides hands-on instruction in technology, engineering, digital media, and the arts, reinforcing his long-standing commitment to giving back.

In recent years, Dickerson has remained a visible presence in the sport as an NFL analyst with FOX Sports and a frequent contributor across iHeartRadio platforms.

His transition from elite athlete to entrepreneur, broadcaster, and philanthropist offers graduates a powerful example of life after sports.

Holding commencement at Ford Stadium for the first time adds symbolic weight to the moment.

As SMU celebrates the Class of 2026, Dickerson’s return to the Hilltop represents both a nod to the university’s storied past and an inspiring reminder of what lies ahead when ambition meets preparation.
