SMU men’s and women’s tennis delivered big ACC wins as the Mustangs upset Duke and shut out Boston College behind dominant singles play.

DALLAS - SMU tennis delivered a statement day in the ACC, with the Mustangs men’s team knocking off No. 43 Duke 4-1 in Dallas while the SMU women’s team dominated Boston College 4-0 on the road.

The dual victories showcased the growing strength of the SMU tennis program as both squads continue building momentum in Atlantic Coast Conference play.

The men’s team set the tone early at Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex, capturing the crucial doubles point before controlling the match in singles competition.

After dropping the first doubles court, SMU quickly flipped the script. Trevor Svajda and Jerry Barton secured a 6-4 win on court two, maintaining their perfect 3-0 record as a doubles pair this season. Moments later, Vikas Deo and Georgi Georgiev delivered the clinching doubles victory with a convincing 6-2 performance.

Once singles play began, SMU’s depth took over.

Georgi Georgiev, who has been on a tear lately, dismantled Planelles Ripoll 6-1, 6-0 to record his first ranked singles victory of the year. The win extended Georgiev’s impressive streak to eight straight singles victories and improved his season mark to 9-2.

Top-ranked Mustang Trevor Svajda followed with another dominant performance, defeating No. 103 Pedro Rodenas 6-4, 6-1. Svajda improved to 11-1 in singles play, continuing a breakout campaign as one of SMU’s most reliable competitors.

With the Mustangs holding a 3-1 lead, Noah McDonald slammed the door shut. The sophomore rolled to a 6-1, 6-2 victory to clinch the match and give SMU its first win over Duke in program history. McDonald improved to 7-4 on the season and has now won three consecutive matches.

Meanwhile, the SMU women’s team was just as impressive in Chestnut Hill, overwhelming No. 60 Boston College in a clean sweep.

The Mustangs grabbed the early advantage by claiming the doubles point. Natalie Stasny and Sophie Llewellyn cruised to a 6-2 win, while the nationally ranked duo of Amelie Van Impe and Caroline McGinley fought through a tough tiebreak to secure the point with a 7-6 victory.

The pair remained perfect at 9-0 on the season, helping SMU maintain an incredible 11-1 record in doubles points this year.

From there, the Mustangs made quick work of singles play.

No. 49 Amelie Van Impe opened the scoring with a dominant 6-1, 6-0 win, followed by Ellie Mireles, who delivered a 6-3, 6-2 victory on court four.

Caroline McGinley sealed the match with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph, pushing SMU to 8-4 overall and 2-3 in ACC play.

With confidence rising on both sides, the Mustangs look poised to keep the momentum rolling as ACC competition heats up.
