DALLAS - SMU women’s tennis keeps checking boxes early in the season, and Friday’s performance was another strong statement.
The Mustangs rolled to a 6-1 home victory over Grand Canyon, improving to 5-1 overall and a perfect 4-0 at home. It’s the program’s best six-match start since the 2020 season, and the confidence is building fast.
As has been the case all spring, SMU set the tone in doubles. The Mustangs remained unbeaten in doubles play at 6-0, once again grabbing the early point with efficient teamwork. Freshmen Ellie Mireles and Addison Comiskey struck first, earning a 6-3 win that applied immediate pressure.
Moments later, Amelie Van Impe and Caroline McGinley closed it out with a 6-4 victory, improving to 3-0 as a pairing this spring.
That early momentum carried straight into singles, where SMU took control from the opening set on every court. No. 70 Sophie Llewellyn was the first to finish, delivering a sharp 6-3, 6-1 win on court two. Addison Comiskey followed closely behind, earning a 6-1, 6-3 victory on court six to keep the Mustangs firmly in command.
The match was officially clinched by Caroline McGinley, who continued her flawless start to the season. McGinley improved to 4-0 with a dominant 6-3, 6-0 win on court three, showcasing both consistency and composure as SMU secured the team result.
The remaining matches only added to the Mustangs’ depth. Natalie Stasny picked up her fifth singles win of the season with a tough 7-5, 6-1 decision, while Amelie Van Impe battled through the first of two three-set matches on the day. Van Impe prevailed in a match tiebreak, winning 6-2, 5-7, [10-7] to earn her second singles victory of the year.
Grand Canyon’s lone point came on court four, where Hams Metwally edged Mireles in a back-and-forth contest, but the result did little to slow SMU’s overall momentum.
The Mustangs now turn their attention to a road test, traveling to face UT Arlington on Friday, Feb. 13.
With doubles dominance, balanced singles production, and confidence growing match by match, SMU is positioning itself as a team to watch as the season continues to unfold.
