Former SMU golfer Bryson DeChambeau won LIV Golf South Africa in a playoff over Jon Rahm, giving the ex-Mustang back-to-back individual titles.

Former SMU golfer Bryson DeChambeau is heading toward the Masters with serious momentum.

The ex-Mustangs standout delivered another huge performance Sunday, winning LIV Golf South Africa in dramatic fashion after outlasting Jon Rahm in a playoff.

For DeChambeau, the victory wasn’t just another trophy. It was a reminder that one of SMU’s most accomplished golf products is still one of the sport’s biggest headliners on the global stage.

And he earned this one the hard way.

DeChambeau entered the final round with a three-shot cushion, but Rahm erased it with a blistering, bogey-free 8-under 65. That charge forced DeChambeau to answer, and he did just enough with a 68 to match Rahm at 26-under and send the tournament to extra holes.

That’s when the former SMU star delivered the shot of the day.

On the first playoff hole, the par-5 18th, DeChambeau ripped a fairway wood onto the green in two from a difficult lie left of the fairway, immediately putting pressure on Rahm.

After Rahm failed to convert from greenside trouble, DeChambeau calmly finished the job with a birdie to lock up the title.

The reaction afterward said plenty.

DeChambeau was visibly emotional after the win, embracing his caddie and teammates as Crushers GC also captured the team title by a single shot.

He didn’t fully explain what was behind the emotion, but he made it clear the week carried weight beyond golf.

“I wish I could tell you,” DeChambeau said. “A lot has happened in the past week.” He added, “Golf is just golf and there’s a lot more to life than just golf.”

For SMU fans, it was another reminder of the kind of talent that once teed it up on the Hilltop.

DeChambeau now owns five LIV individual wins, and this latest one makes him the first player on the circuit to win back-to-back events since 2023.

That’s not just a hot streak. That’s a former Mustang looking dangerous at exactly the right time.
