Former SMU Mustangs wide receiver Jordan Hudson is getting a hometown NFL opportunity with the Dallas Cowboys.
After going undrafted in the 2026 NFL Draft, Hudson reportedly agreed to terms with Dallas as a rookie free agent, giving the Garland High School product a chance to fight for a roster spot with the team he grew up cheering for. For SMU fans, it’s a pretty perfect landing spot.
Hudson began his college career at TCU before transferring to SMU, where he became a productive piece of the Mustangs’ passing game.
Despite missing three games with an elbow injury in his final season, Hudson still caught 61 passes for 766 yards and six touchdowns. He also earned third-team All-ACC honors.
Now comes the hard part.
Dallas already has CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens and Ryan Flournoy at the top of the receiver room, but the depth chart isn’t completely locked in.
The Cowboys lost Jalen Tolbert in free agency, while KaVontae Turpin’s offensive role remains uncertain. Jonathan Mingo may enter camp with an edge, but players like Traeshon Holden, Anthony Smith, Parris Campbell and Hudson should all get a chance to push for snaps.
That’s where Hudson’s route-running, toughness and local connection could make him interesting.
Undrafted receivers usually face a steep climb, but the Cowboys have a long history of giving priority free agents real opportunities if they show up in camp.
Hudson also won’t need long to become a fan favorite. A Garland native, former SMU standout and lifelong Cowboys fan fighting for a job in Oxnard? That’s exactly the kind of training camp story Dallas fans love.
Making the 53-man roster won’t be easy, but Hudson has a real opening.
If he stacks strong practices and flashes in preseason games, the former Mustang could turn a post-draft signing into one of the Cowboys’ better feel-good stories.
