SMU basketball added assistant coach Jason Hart, giving Andy Enfield a trusted recruiter and veteran coach as the Mustangs keep reshaping their staff.
DALLAS - SMU basketball made another notable offseason move by adding veteran assistant Jason Hart to Andy Enfield’s coaching staff, a hire that could carry real weight for the Mustangs in recruiting and roster building heading into 2026.
Hart’s arrival gives SMU a coach with deep ties to Enfield and a long track record across both college basketball and the professional game.
The two previously worked together at USC, where they helped build competitive Pac-12 teams and develop multiple high-level players.
When a head coach brings in an assistant he already trusts, it usually means the new assistant will have an immediate voice in everything from player development to transfer portal evaluation.
For SMU, that’s especially important right now.
The Mustangs are still trying to establish themselves as a consistent force under Enfield, and every offseason move feels magnified as the program pushes for NCAA Tournament staying power.
Hart has been known as a strong relationship builder on the recruiting trail, and that reputation could be valuable for an SMU program looking to win more battles for elite high school prospects while also staying aggressive in the portal.
This move also adds another experienced basketball mind to a staff that’s expected to be under pressure to deliver results.
SMU has the resources, the market, and the conference platform to be more than just an occasional threat. Adding Hart suggests Enfield is continuing to shape the program with trusted pieces rather than standing still.
There’s also a practical side to the hire.
Hart has worked in player development roles and spent time as the head coach of the NBA G League Ignite, giving him experience with modern roster management and with players chasing the next level. In today’s college basketball world, that matters as much as ever.
For SMU, this looks like more than a routine staff addition. It looks like a move designed to help the Mustangs win now while building toward something bigger.
