DALLAS - The SMU Mustangs basketball team returns home Wednesday night for one of the biggest games of its season, hosting No. 22 Miami at Moody Coliseum in a matchup that carries major ACC standings and NCAA Tournament implications.
For SMU, the night will be about more than just basketball.
Before tipoff, the program will celebrate Senior Night, honoring B.J. Edwards, Boopie Miller, Jaron Pierre Jr., Trey Utter and Corey Washington. The group helped guide the Mustangs through their transition into the ACC and turned Moody Coliseum into one of the toughest home courts in the conference.
And the numbers back it up. SMU enters the game 15-2 at home this season and sits 19-10 overall with an 8-8 ACC record, putting the Mustangs squarely on the NCAA Tournament bubble with postseason play around the corner.
Offensively, SMU has been one of the most dynamic teams in the conference. The Mustangs average 85.8 points per game, ranking second in the ACC, while shooting 49.8 percent from the field and 37.9 percent from 3-point range, both near the top of the league.
The attack is led by veteran guard Boopie Miller, who averages 18.9 points and 6.7 assists per game.
Miller ranks second in the ACC in assists and has emerged as one of the most complete guards in the conference. His performance earlier this season against North Carolina - 27 points and 12 assists - helped vault SMU into the national spotlight.
While Miller runs the offense, B.J. Edwards has quietly built one of the most versatile stat lines in the league.
Edwards averages 12.7 points, 5.9 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 2.3 steals per game, leading the ACC in steals and becoming one of only two players in the nation with multiple triple-doubles this season.
SMU’s offensive depth is what makes the Mustangs difficult to guard. Jaron Pierre Jr. (17.6 PPG), Corey Washington (11.6 PPG) and Samet Yigitoglu (10.8 PPG) give SMU five players averaging double figures.
Yigitoglu also anchors the interior with 7.8 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game, ranking among the ACC leaders in both categories.
Even after a 95-75 loss to Stanford in their last outing, SMU still owns two ranked wins this season, both at Moody Coliseum, including victories over No. 12 North Carolina and No. 21 Louisville.
That’s why Wednesday’s game against Miami matters so much.
With the ACC Tournament approaching, the Mustangs have one final chance to build momentum, defend their home court, and send their seniors out with a statement win.
