The SMU football 2026 schedule is shaping up to be one of the most fascinating in the program’s ACC era.
With quarterback Kevin Jennings entering his third season as the starter, head coach Rhett Lashlee has a roster capable of competing for another ACC Championship appearance.
But the path won’t be easy. SMU’s slate includes a rare nine-game ACC schedule, several late-season flex dates, and a massive road trip to Notre Dame that could define the Mustangs’ national standing.
The season begins with immediate pressure when SMU travels to Florida State on opening weekend. The Monday night matchup in Doak Campbell Stadium will be one of the most electric atmospheres the Mustangs face all year.
Despite Florida State finishing 5-7 in 2025, the Seminoles remain a dangerous opponent at home.
Another key early test comes on the road at Louisville. The Cardinals return star running back Isaac Brown, one of the most explosive backs in college football before suffering a lower-leg injury last season. Louisville also added transfer quarterback Lincoln Kienholz, making the mid-September trip a serious challenge.
Midseason brings revenge opportunities.
In late October, SMU hosts Cal, the team that stunned the Mustangs in last season’s finale and kept them from returning to the ACC Championship Game.
With quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele returning and a strong transfer class arriving in Berkeley, the Golden Bears could once again play spoiler.
Another intriguing matchup is Virginia’s visit to Dallas.
The Cavaliers reloaded through the transfer portal with 29 new players, positioning themselves as a potential ACC dark horse.
Still, the most anticipated game on the schedule is clear.
On November 21, SMU travels to Notre Dame for its first game in South Bend since 1989.
The Fighting Irish finished the 2025 season ranked No. 10 in the AP Poll, and a victory there would instantly elevate SMU’s national reputation.
With Jennings leading a high-powered offense and Lashlee continuing to build momentum in the ACC, the Mustangs enter 2026 with legitimate expectations.
And if things break right, this schedule could launch SMU into the national spotlight once again.
