The Mustangs will move two future home games to AT&T Stadium in a move that is sure to perk up nostalgia from the Pony Express days.

Two high-profile SMU football games will be getting a venue upgrade.

According to a report by On3, a Mustangs home game in 2027 against Oklahoma and a home game against LSU in 2029 will be moving to AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys in Arlington.

The games are expected to see substantial crowd attendance from the nearby SEC opponents, so the 80,000-seat venue known as "Jerry World" will be more compatible than SMU's Gerald J. Ford Stadium, which holds just over 33,000.

Sources said it is a decision that was made for greater "branding and revenue opportunities."

The meeting with the Sooners will complete a home-and-home series, which began in 2023 with a 28-11 win for OU. SMU will begin a home-and-home series with the Tigers in 2028 in Baton Rouge before the meeting the following year in Arlington. The game two years from now will be the first head-to-head affair for the schools since 1934.

It will be the first time SMU plays at the home of the "America's Team" in over 40 years when games the program's infamous "Pony Express" era were played at Texas Stadium from 1979-86.

The dual running back tandem of Eric Dickerson and Craig James brough SMU football to the forefront of national conversation, helping the Mustangs finish No. 5 in the 1981 AP Top-25, and No. 2 in 1982.

That eight-year stretch at Texas Stadium brought seven winning seasons, four of which had double-digit wins for SMU.

Since those days, the Ponies have seen a resurgence under current head coach Rhett Lashlee, who signed a contract extension during the 2025 season that keeps him on The Hilltop through the 2032 season.

Lashlee has led SMU to its first back-to-back 10-win seasons since 1981-84, one of which included the program's first College Football Playoff berth in 2024.

Last season, the Mustangs finished 9-4 and 5-1 in home games. Their final win of the season came in a 24-19 final against Arizona in the Trust & Will Holiday Bowl in San Diego.
