SMU football will open its season at Florida State on Labor Day night, giving the Mustangs a national ESPN showcase in Tallahassee.
DALLAS - SMU football will begin its upcoming season on a national stage, and the spotlight will be bright right away.
The Mustangs’ season opener at Florida State has officially been set for Labor Day, Sept. 7, with kickoff scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT in Tallahassee.

The game will air nationally on ESPN, giving SMU a major early-season showcase against one of the ACC’s most recognizable programs.
For SMU, this is exactly the kind of opener that can shape national perception before the season really gets rolling. A road trip to Doak Campbell Stadium is never a small assignment, and a standalone Labor Day window only adds to the attention.
It’s a chance for the Mustangs to make an immediate statement in front of a national television audience.
The matchup also comes with some recent history.
SMU and Florida State have met only once before, and the Mustangs controlled that game in impressive fashion. SMU beat the Seminoles 42-16 in 2024 at Ford Stadium, a performance that gave the Mustangs one of their most memorable wins in recent years.
Now the series shifts to Tallahassee, where Florida State will get its shot at payback and SMU will try to prove the previous meeting wasn’t a one-off.
The Labor Day timing should bring even more energy to the matchup, especially with both fan bases getting a marquee opener to circle all offseason.
For SMU, the formula is simple: handle the moment, start fast and show it can travel into a hostile environment against a brand-name opponent.

A win would immediately boost the Mustangs’ resume and give the program national momentum.
The opener won’t define the entire season, but it’ll certainly set the tone. And with ESPN carrying it in prime time, everyone will be watching.
