Joe and Sherry Beard’s $1 million gift boosts SMU’s Student-Athlete Benefit Fund as the Mustangs keep pushing harder in the ACC era.

SMU Athletics just added another serious piece to its growing financial machine.

Mustang Partners announced a $1 million gift from Joe Beard and Sherry Beard to support the Student-Athlete Benefit Fund, giving the Mustangs another boost as the program tries to keep pace in the new age of college athletics.

For SMU, this isn’t just a nice donor headline, it’s another sign that the school’s support system is getting more aggressive.

The gift is designed to help SMU student-athletes with resources that go beyond game day.

The Student-Athlete Benefit Fund supports academic, athletic and personal development needs, giving Mustang athletes more backing as college sports becomes more expensive and more competitive by the year.

Joe Beard isn’t just another name on a donor wall, he’s part of SMU football history.

A former Mustang standout, Beard earned All-Southwest Conference honors and honorable mention All-America recognition.

He also helped SMU win Southwest Conference and national championships in 1981 and 1982, during one of the most famous eras in program history.

In 2023, he received the Silver Anniversary Mustang Award, further tying his legacy to the university.

SMU Director of Athletics Damon Evans called the Beards’ commitment “extraordinary” and said gifts like this help the Mustangs compete at the highest level.

Joe and Sherry Beard kept their message simple.

“We are fortunate to have been blessed with the resources to help the worthy cause of supporting our student athletes,” they said.

The donation also adds momentum to the Boulevard Society, SMU Athletics’ major-gifts initiative.

Earlier this year, Liz and Bill Armstrong, Carolyn and David Miller, Katy and Kyle Miller, and Mary and Rich Templeton helped launch the effort with a $50 million commitment.

SMU is now at $23.550 million toward its goal of securing an additional $50 million by Dec. 31, 2026.

That’s the bigger story here. SMU isn’t easing into this new era. It’s spending, organizing and pushing like a program that expects to matter.
