No. 16 SMU visits No. 23 Louisville on Saturday for an early ACC showdown featuring two of the nation’s most productive quarterbacks.
Kevin Jennings has the Mustangs surging at 2-0, while Louisville’s Lincoln Kienholz has quickly established himself as a dangerous dual-threat playmaker.
Jennings enters the ranked matchup after dismantling UC Davis in SMU’s 56-10 home-opening victory.
He completed 14 of 16 passes for 337 yards and a career-high five touchdowns and produced all of it before halftime.
That performance followed a 430-yard, three-touchdown passing effort in SMU’s 27-24 road victory over Florida State.
Through two games, Jennings has completed 40 of 52 passes for 767 yards, eight touchdowns and two interceptions. His 76.9 percent completion rate reflects an offense that’s attacking defenses without sacrificing efficiency.
The Mustangs also displayed their depth against UC Davis, setting a school record with 16 players recording a reception.
SMU has topped 500 yards of total offense in both games and produced seven touchdown drives lasting less than two minutes.
Louisville presents a much tougher challenge.
The Cardinals rebounded from a 41-38 loss to Ole Miss by overwhelming Villanova 59-13.
Louisville generated 635 total yards in that victory, including more than 350 through the air and 250 on the ground.
Kienholz completed 16 of 21 passes for 332 yards and two touchdowns against Villanova.
Combined with his 307-yard performance against Ole Miss, the Ohio State transfer has become the first Louisville quarterback to open his Cardinals career with consecutive 300-yard passing games. He has also rushed for three touchdowns.
SMU’s defense will try to disrupt that rhythm. The Mustangs have recorded 129 sacks since the beginning of the 2023 season, the most among FBS programs during that span.
They’ve also forced 53 turnovers since 2024.
History favors SMU. The Mustangs are 4-0 against Louisville, including a 38-6 victory last season and a 34-27 road win in 2024.
“They’ve had our number,” Louisville coach Jeff Brohm said while turning his attention toward the matchup.
SMU has won 15 of its first 17 ACC games and is 14-3 across its past 17 regular-season road contests.
Another victory would give the Mustangs an early advantage in the conference race while strengthening their national résumé.
Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Central on Saturday at L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium. ESPN2 will televise the game.
