SMU men’s golf climbed to sixth place at The Goodwin, led by Will Sides’ third-place finish and a final-round push ahead of the ACC Championship.

SMU men’s golf closed The Goodwin with the kind of Sunday surge coaches love to see.

The Mustangs used a steady final round at Stanford Golf Course to climb into a tie for sixth place, finishing even par for the tournament and moving up four spots on the leaderboard against a stacked field.

That climb says plenty about where SMU stands heading into the postseason.

The Mustangs finished behind only five teams and held off a deep group of nationally respected programs, giving the team another encouraging result before the ACC Championship later this month.

Will Sides once again set the pace for SMU men’s golf. He delivered the best tournament of the week for the Mustangs, finishing at 7-under and jumping into a tie for third after a sharp final-round 66.

Sides made one of the biggest moves of the day, rising 10 spots on the leaderboard while showing the kind of closing kick that can change a tournament. His eagle on the par-5 16th was one of the highlights of the round.

Sides’ latest performance also added another notable mark to his season.

His scoring average now sits at 70.00, matching the best single-season number in program history. His career average of 71.26 is also among the top three ever recorded by an SMU golfer.

Zachary Kingsland gave the Mustangs another solid scorecard, finishing even par for the event after rounds of 69, 71 and 70.

That placed him in a tie for 29th. Christian Clark added a tie for 59th after a final-round 71, and he gave himself an early spark by reaching 3-under through his first seven holes.

Ben Steinmann finished 78th and also eagled the 16th, while Gabe Post climbed 12 places in the final round with a 72.

Now the focus shifts to Panama City, where SMU will try to carry this momentum into the ACC Championship.

If the Mustangs get another performance like Sides delivered at Stanford, they’ll have a real chance to make noise.
