SMU men’s golf fell to 10th after round two at The Goodwin, but Will Sides stayed hot and remains in contention entering Saturday’s final round.
SMU men’s golf couldn’t quite match its strong opening round on Friday, and the Mustangs slid into 10th place after day two at The Goodwin in Stanford.
After opening the tournament at 5-under, SMU posted a 6-over round and now sits at 1-over for the event in one of the toughest fields it will see all season.
That doesn’t mean the Mustangs are out of the mix. Far from it.
SMU men’s golf is still right in the middle of a crowded leaderboard that features 14 top-50 teams, and a solid final round could quickly change the outlook.
BYU and UCLA share the top spot at 12-under, but the standings remain tight enough for movement across the board heading into Saturday.
Will Sides once again led the way for SMU, continuing his impressive run of form.
Sides shot an even-par round and is tied for 13th at 3-under overall. He caught fire again in the middle of his round, stringing together three straight birdies from holes five through seven.
More importantly, he continues to put together one of the best statistical seasons in program history. His season scoring average is now down to 70.16, which trails only Noah Goodwin’s 70.00 mark from 2020-21 in SMU history.
His career average also improved to 71.31, now third-best all-time among Mustangs behind Goodwin and Bryson DeChambeau.
Zachary Kingsland also helped steady the lineup.
He carded a 71 and moved into a tie for 28th at even par for the tournament. Ben Steinmann sits just behind him in a tie for 39th after a 73. Christian Clark posted a 72, while Gabe Post finished with a 74.
The second round wasn’t as clean as the first, but SMU still has a chance to finish strong.
With Sides continuing to play at a high level and several Mustangs still within reach of a jump up the board, Saturday gives SMU an opportunity to close The Goodwin with momentum.
