SMU men’s tennis added Luis Andres Flores Avila, a top international junior from Mexico, giving the Mustangs another major boost for the 2026 roster.

SMU men’s tennis just landed another major piece for the future, and this one arrives with serious international credentials.

Luis Andres Flores Avila, one of the top junior players in the world, has signed with the Mustangs and will join the program for the 2026 fall season.

That addition gives SMU men’s tennis a high-upside recruit with proven results on the global junior circuit. Flores Avila reached a career-best ITF junior ranking of No. 83 and built his résumé with big wins in 2025, including singles titles at the ITF J1000 Veracruz and ITF J1000 Manacor events.

He also made a deep run at the 2026 ITF J200 Valencia, battling through qualifying and four main-draw matches before finishing as runner-up.

For SMU, this is the kind of signing that turns heads. Flores Avila brings both polish and potential, which is exactly what top college programs chase in international recruiting.

He also arrives with a strong 12.74 Universal Tennis Rating and a 15-5 record on clay this season, showing he’s not just talented but already accustomed to winning.

There’s also a developmental angle that makes this commitment even more intriguing. Flores Avila has trained at the Rafa Nadal Academy, one of the most respected tennis pipelines in the world, and he has represented Mexico in Junior Davis Cup competition.

That sort of background usually means a player shows up with a mature game, a professional approach and a clear understanding of what high-level tennis demands.

The Texas connection matters, too. SMU clearly sees Flores Avila as more than a talented international name.

The Mustangs are adding a player with deep regional ties, world-class training and the kind of academic focus that fits the program’s long-term vision. He plans to study finance in Dallas while continuing his tennis career.

For Grant Chen and SMU, this feels like another statement move. And for Mustangs fans, it’s a reminder that the program is recruiting with real ambition.
