SMU men’s tennis brings ACC play back to Dallas this weekend as Trevor Svajda leads the Mustangs against Miami and Florida State.
DALLAS - SMU men’s tennis is back in Dallas this weekend, and the Mustangs are bringing real momentum with them.
After a strong road stretch that included a massive win over Baylor and another ACC result at Cal, No. 29 SMU now gets a chance to defend home court against Miami on Friday and Florida State on Sunday at Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex.
That’s a big spot for Grant Chen’s team, especially with ACC play heating up and Trevor Svajda playing like the best singles player in college tennis.
Svajda enters the weekend ranked No. 1 in the country after a huge 3-0 week in singles. He’s now 15-1 this spring and has dropped only five sets across 40 total sets played.
That kind of consistency has turned him into one of the biggest stories in college tennis, and SMU is feeding off it.
His rise isn’t just about college results either. Svajda recently earned a wild card into qualifying at Indian Wells and became the first Mustang since Richey Reneberg in 1999 to win a match at the ATP 1000 level.
SMU’s lineup has more than one weapon, though.
Alex Finkelstein has climbed into the rankings and gives the Mustangs another reliable singles presence, while the roster as a whole looks more dangerous than it has in a while.
The team ranking of No. 29 is SMU’s highest since May of 2022, and the program keeps stacking milestones under Chen.
The challenge this weekend won’t be soft. Miami has already beaten SMU once before, and Florida State brings four ranked singles players into Dallas.
That makes this weekend less about easing into conference action and more about proving the Mustangs are built to stay relevant in the ACC race.
SMU has already shown it can handle big moments.
The win over No. 8 Baylor snapped a long drought in that rivalry and marked the highest-ranked victory of the Chen era. Now the Mustangs need to turn that road confidence into home-court pressure.
With Svajda at No. 1 and the Mustangs trending up, this weekend feels like a chance for SMU to make even more noise.
