SMU men’s tennis picked up a big ACC road win Thursday, beating Georgia Tech 4-2 in Atlanta behind another standout effort from Trevor Svajda and a strong overall team performance.
The Mustangs, ranked No. 31 nationally, improved to 17-9 overall and 7-4 in ACC play with the victory, while continuing to build momentum heading into Saturday’s matchup at No. 34 Clemson.
The tone was set early in doubles, where SMU grabbed the first point of the afternoon with wins on courts two and three. Georgi Georgiev and Vikas Deo opened with a 6-3 victory, improving their season mark to 12-3 as a pairing.
After Georgia Tech answered on court one, Svajda and Jerry Barton closed the door with a 6-2 win to secure the doubles point and move to 11-3 together this spring.
In singles, Georgia Tech briefly evened the score, but SMU had the answers.
Barton delivered a steady 6-2, 6-4 win on court five to restore the lead and continue one of the most reliable runs in the lineup.
He’s now 15-5 in singles and has stacked up 11 straight-set victories this season. Krish Arora followed with a composed 7-6(5), 6-2 win on court four, pushing his singles record to 12-9 and giving the Mustangs a 3-1 edge.
That left the spotlight where it so often lands for SMU ... on Svajda.
The junior, ranked No. 1 nationally, dropped the opening set on court one before taking control and rolling to a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 comeback win over Christophe Clement.
The clincher extended Svajda’s unbeaten streak to 11 matches and improved his spring singles record to a remarkable 19-1.
For SMU, this was more than just another win. Beating Georgia Tech on the road showed the Mustangs have the depth, toughness and top-end star power to stay dangerous as the ACC schedule tightens.
