SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings is expected to be limited for up to two weeks after suffering a throwing-hand injury during Mustangs fall camp.

SMU football has its first notable injury concern of fall camp, and unfortunately for the Mustangs, it involves the player they can least afford to lose.

Quarterback Kevin Jennings is dealing with an injury to his throwing hand and is expected to be limited for the next one to two weeks of SMU fall camp.

The timetable offers plenty of reason to believe Jennings will be ready when the games count, but anything involving a quarterback's throwing hand is going to command attention.

Especially when that quarterback is the centerpiece of SMU's 2026 College Football Playoff hopes.

Jennings enters his final season in Dallas after throwing for 3,641 yards in 2025 and accounting for 30 touchdowns, giving head coach Rhett Lashlee one of the most accomplished returning quarterbacks in the ACC.

He's also become the face of a program that has gone from conference newcomer to legitimate national contender.

That makes caution the obvious move.

There's little reason for SMU to push Jennings through August practices if additional rest can get his hand completely healthy before the season begins.

The Mustangs know what they have in their veteran starter. At this point, protecting him matters considerably more than piling up extra fall-camp repetitions.

Still, the injury creates an unexpected subplot.

Throwing-hand issues can be tricky for quarterbacks because even relatively minor injuries can affect grip, ball placement and comfort.

SMU will undoubtedly be watching Jennings closely as he works his way back toward unrestricted practice.

It also creates valuable snaps for the quarterbacks behind him. Those reps could become important over a long season, particularly after Jennings battled injuries at various points in 2025.

The bigger picture hasn't changed.

SMU entered camp with ACC championship ambitions and another potential run at the College Football Playoff. Jennings is a major reason why.

The Dallas native has developed into the leader of Lashlee's program while choosing to remain at SMU throughout his college career.

For now, this looks more like an August speed bump than a season-changing development. But when the injured hand belongs to Kevin Jennings, SMU won't be taking any chances.
