SMU offensive lineman Addison Nichols lands at No. 6 among college football’s top returning guards after allowing zero sacks in the Mustangs’ 2025 season.

SMU offensive lineman Addison Nichols is getting national attention heading into the 2026 college football season, and it’s easy to see why.

The Mustangs’ veteran guard has been ranked No. 6 among the top returning guards in college football, a nod to both his consistency and his impact in pass protection for one of the nation’s more aggressive offenses.

Nichols has become one of the most reliable pieces on the Mustangs’ offensive line since making the move from center to right guard after transferring from Arkansas.

At 6-5 and 315 pounds, the redshirt senior brings the kind of size coaches love inside, but what separates him is how cleanly he handles pressure. In a pass-heavy system, that matters even more.

Last season, Nichols did not allow a sack, an impressive mark for any offensive lineman, especially an interior blocker dealing with constant movement, blitzes and stunts.

Over 875 career pass-blocking snaps, he has given up only six total pressures, which is the kind of production that puts a player firmly on the NFL radar and makes him one of the most valuable returning linemen in the ACC.

That level of protection helped SMU finish among the top 30 teams nationally in sacks allowed, and it gave the Mustangs stability in an offense that asks a lot from its front five.

While tackles usually get more attention in preseason rankings, Nichols’ placement at No. 6 underscores how important elite guard play has become in modern college football.

As defenses get more creative with interior pressure packages, players like Nichols are worth their weight in gold.

He’s not just a steady veteran presence for SMU, he’s one of the best returning guards in the country and a major reason the Mustangs should feel confident about their offensive line entering 2026.

For SMU, having Addison Nichols back may end up being one of the most important roster wins of the offseason.
