No. 7 SMU men stayed unbeaten with a 3-1 win at Pitt, while the Mustang women saw a seven-game unbeaten streak end in a 2-1 loss at Miami.
SMU soccer opened ACC play Friday with two very different road results, as the seventh-ranked Mustang men continued their unbeaten start while the women saw one of their best stretches in years come to an end.
The SMU men defeated Pitt 3-1 in Pittsburgh, improving to 6-0-1 and earning the program’s first victory in an ACC opener.
Jaylinn Mitchell provided the breakthrough in the 29th minute, creating his own opportunity outside the penalty area before beating the Pitt defense for his second goal of the season.
Mitchell now has seven goal contributions through seven games with two goals and five assists.
Pitt pushed for an equalizer after halftime, but SMU turned the match decisively in its favor.
Stephan Soghomonian scored in the 62nd minute following a turnover forced by Mukisa Emmanuel. It was Soghomonian’s fourth goal this season and the 18th of his SMU career.
Villads Landsperg made it 3-0 in the 77th minute, finishing a chance created by Noah Holmstrøm for his first goal as a Mustang.
SMU needed only 38 percent possession to control the dangerous moments, outshooting Pitt 14-8. The Mustangs have now scored 22 goals while allowing only three through seven matches.
Pitt broke through in the 89th minute, but the result was already secure.
SMU returns home next Friday for a major test against 2025 NCAA runner-up NC State.
The Mustang women weren’t as fortunate in Coral Gables.
SMU’s seven-match unbeaten streak ended with a 2-1 loss to Miami, dropping the Mustangs to 5-2-2 overall and 0-1 in ACC play.
After a scoreless first half, Miami grabbed control with a goal in the 64th minute and later doubled its advantage from the penalty spot.
SMU nearly found a response earlier when an attacking cross struck the crossbar, but the breakthrough didn’t arrive until the 84th minute.
Londynn Hagan curled home her fourth goal of the season to cut Miami’s lead to one and give the Mustangs a late opportunity to steal a point.
Miami held on.
SMU generated only five shots in a defensive matchup in which the teams combined for 11 attempts. Goalkeeper Aubrey Brown finished with two saves.
The Mustang women continue ACC play Thursday at NC State, where they’ll try to begin another unbeaten run.
