SMU defensive coordinator Maurice Crum says the Mustangs are practicing faster, communicating better, and building a deeper, more aggressive defense this spring.
SMU football is still early in spring practice, but defensive coordinator Maurice Crum already likes what he’s seeing from the Mustangs’ defense. The biggest takeaway so far is clear: this group is buying in fast.
That matters for an SMU defense looking to take a real step in 2026. Crum said the tone has been set by a veteran linebacker room led by players who’ve grown up inside the program.
That experience is showing early, especially with the way the unit practices, communicates, and responds to coaching. For SMU, that kind of leadership could be the key to building a more consistent defense this season.
Crum pointed to linebackers such as Isaiah Nwokobia, Brandon Booker, and Ahmad Walker as examples of players who now understand how to lead instead of simply trying to earn snaps.
That maturity has helped raise the standard across the room and given the Mustangs a stronger foundation on defense.
He also believes SMU looks deeper and more athletic up front. The defensive line flashed more length and versatility in the opening practices, while the secondary appears better equipped to handle the demands of a full season.
Crum noted that the safety room still has the least game experience, but he likes how quickly that group is developing. At corner, he sees players building on the progress they made late last year.
Jonathan Jefferson’s return was another encouraging sign. His presence gives SMU an experienced voice in the room and another player who understands the standard the staff wants every day.
For Crum, the identity he wants isn’t complicated. He wants opposing coaches to turn on the film and see an SMU defense that plays hard, runs to the ball, tackles, and stays aggressive.
If the Mustangs can match that effort with sharper execution, this unit has a chance to become one of the more improved defenses in the ACC.
