SMU junior Trevor Svajda will compete for a US Open main draw wild card after a huge NCAA singles runner-up season.

SMU tennis star Trevor Svajda is getting a shot at something massive: a path straight into the US Open.

The Mustangs junior has been selected for the US Open American Collegiate Player Wild Card Playoff, set for June 16-18 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando.

The four-player men’s singles playoff carries a serious prize. Win it, and Svajda earns a US Open main draw singles wild card. Finish second, and he still lands a spot in US Open qualifying.

That’s a massive stage for one of college tennis’ hottest names.

Svajda earned his spot after finishing runner-up at the 2025 NCAA Singles Championship, a run that stamped him as one of the best players in the country.

The San Diego native closed the spring with a 21-3 singles record, including nine ranked wins, and was ranked No. 1 nationally by the ITA four different times.

He wasn’t just stacking wins, either. He was collecting respect.

Svajda was named All-ACC Singles First Team, earned ACC Player of the Week honors three times and became a UTR Hurd Award finalist. On the pro side, he’s already pushing forward, currently ranked No. 393 in the ATP rankings after reaching a career-best No. 358 in February.

He also picked up a notable qualifying win at the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells in March.

This won’t be his first taste of the event. Svajda played in the inaugural American Collegiate Player Wild Card Playoff last year in doubles with Louis Cloud. Now, he’s back with a bigger target and a cleaner runway.

The USTA will announce the full fields on May 27, with selections made by a committee featuring USTA staff, college coaches and an ITA representative.

Matches will be played each night from Tuesday through Thursday, with free admission and streaming coverage from Cracked Racquets.

For SMU, this is another headline moment.

For Svajda, it’s a chance to turn a monster college season into a New York breakthrough.
