B.J. Edwards showcased his skills in a pre-draft workout in Dallas.

SMU guard B.J. Edwards is gearing up for a busy couple of weeks showcasing the skills he hopes can earn him a spot in the NBA. He didn't have to go far for a workout this week.

According to reporter Vince Wolfram, Edwards competed in a workout hosted by the Dallas Mavericks ahead of this month's NBA Draft.

Edwards, a 6-3 guard out of Knoxville, Tennessee, averaged 12.7 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per game for the Mustangs. He started in each of the Ponies' 28 games to begin the 2025-26 season, but would ultimately miss the rest of the season with an injury.

There were rumors that Edwards would be healthy enough to return in time for the NCAA tournament, but SMU couldn't make it out of the opening round as it lost to Miami (OH), 89-79, without Edwards.

Now, months removed from the end of the season, Edwards is out to prove that he's ready to make the jump into the professional ranks.

The nearby Mavs have the No. 9, 30, and 48 picks in this year's draft. Edwards isn't currently considered to be a first-round prospect, but Dallas won't turn down the opportunity to scout local talent, especially considering how much is at stake this offseason for the Mavericks' new-look front office.

When healthy, Edwards was one of the most efficient players in the ACC this season and had a natural two-way ability.

He ranked fifth in the conference and 66th in the country in assist-to-turnover ratio, posting a mark of 2.56. Edwards also averaged 2.3 steals per game, the most in the ACC and 12th most in the NCAA. He ended his three-year stint on the Hilltop with the sixth-best career assist-to-turnover ratio in program history (2.30).

His best performances from this season were his pair of triple doubles near the end of the 2025 calendar year.

On Nov. 21, Edwards set the SMU single-game record with 10 steals, adding 24 points and 13 assists in the effort, as the Mustangs beat Arkansas State.

Then, on Dec. 28, Edwards became the first player in the nation to record multiple triple-doubles in 2025-26 as he scored 21 points, grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds, and dished out 10 assists (plus five steals) against Cal State Fullerton.

The NBA Draft is scheduled for June 23, airing live on ESPN at 7 p.m. CT.
