SMU opens the Paradise Invitational against Kentucky on Sept. 12, giving the Mustangs another shot to break through against a national power.

DALLAS - The SMU Mustangs just got a heavyweight opening assignment, and there’s no easing into this event.

SMU volleyball will open the new Paradise Invitational against Kentucky on Saturday, Sept. 12, setting up one of the most intriguing early-season matchups on the schedule.

For a program trying to prove it belongs on a bigger stage, this is the kind of game that can grab attention fast. And it won’t stop there.

The Mustangs will come back the next day for a second game against either Purdue or Houston, depending on how the opening round shakes out.

That means SMU is guaranteed two high-profile opportunities in a tournament field loaded with brand names and postseason expectations.

The opener is especially interesting because SMU and Kentucky are getting very familiar with each other. This will be the third meeting in the last three seasons, and SMU is still hunting for its first breakthrough in the series. The Wildcats own a 5-0 all-time edge, so the challenge is obvious.

It’s also a massive one. Kentucky enters the event after a monster 2025 campaign that included another SEC regular-season title, an SEC Tournament championship, and a run all the way to the national title game. That’s not just a good team. That’s one of the sport’s measuring-stick programs.

Which is exactly why this matchup matters so much for SMU.

Early-season tournaments are usually about more than trophies. They’re about finding out how real you are before the calendar turns serious.

If the Mustangs can punch back against Kentucky and then follow it up with a strong second game against either Purdue or Houston, the perception of this team could change in a hurry.

The full format is simple. On Saturday, Sept. 12, it’s Kentucky vs. SMU and Purdue vs. Houston. On Sunday, Sept. 13, the winners meet and the losers meet.

So yes, it’s only September. But for SMU, the Paradise Invitational already feels like a statement opportunity.
