Led by Heisman hopeful Kevin Jennings, five elite Mustangs secure prestigious honors as the program’s rising national profile cements its status among the powerhouse rosters of Texas.
SMU football continues to earn statewide recognition ahead of the 2026 season, as five Mustangs were named to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Preseason All-Texas Teams, highlighting the talent that has helped elevate the program into one of the state's premier contenders.
The preseason honors recognize the top college football players across Texas, regardless of conference affiliation, and SMU was well represented with five selections spread across both sides of the ball.
Leading the way for SMU is standout quarterback Kevin Jennings, who is emerging as one of the ACC's top signal callers. Jennings helped guide the Mustangs through another successful campaign and enters the new season as somewhat of a dark horse contender for the Heisman trophy.
On offense, Jennings was joined by offensive lineman PJ Williams and wide receiver Yamir Knight. Williams is going into the 2026 season as one of the best offensive lineman in the country, while Knight is coming off of a big performance that earned him offensive MVP of the Holiday Bowl.
The defensive side of the ball was represented by linebacker Alexander Kilgore, who finished the 2025 season with 60 tackles and a pair of interceptions. The team also got a shoutout on special teams with kicker Nick Reed.
Having five players recognized among the state's best is no small accomplishment considering the level of competition across Texas. Programs from the SEC, Big 12, AAC and ACC all produce elite talent, making a spot on the All-Texas teams a significant honor before the season even begins.
The preseason accolades also reinforce the respect SMU has earned nationally following its rise over the past several years. Rather than being viewed as a surprise contender, the Mustangs are now expected to compete for championships, and individual honors like these reflect that growing reputation.
With experienced leaders on both offense and defense, SMU enters the 2026 season with one of the most decorated rosters in Texas and every reason to believe another memorable campaign could be on the horizon.
