SMU women’s golf surged to a runner-up finish at the Huntington Bank Collegiate, while Mackenzie Lee claimed medalist honors in her final regular-season event.
SMU women’s golf closed the regular season with a statement performance Tuesday, finishing second at the Huntington Bank Collegiate while Mackenzie Lee delivered a breakthrough individual title at Trinity Forest Golf Club.
For a team building momentum toward the postseason, it felt like a timely result.
Lee, a senior from North Little Rock, Arkansas, captured the first tournament win of her college career by finishing at 13-under par, tying Oklahoma State’s Marta Silchenko before prevailing in the tiebreaker.
It was a fitting milestone in her final regular-season appearance and another impressive addition to a résumé that now includes 24 career top-10 finishes.
Her closing round had the look of a winner. Lee stayed steady early, played clean golf across the front side and then made the move everyone will remember with an eagle on the 16th hole.
Across three rounds, she made only three bogeys, a mark of consistency that helped separate her from a crowded leaderboard.
As a team, SMU finished at 22-under, just three shots behind champion Oklahoma State at 25-under.
The Mustangs’ final total now stands as the fifth-lowest 54-hole score in program history, and it came against one of the toughest fields they’ve seen all spring.
SMU ended the week ahead of eight ranked teams, including UCLA, Tennessee and TCU.
The lineup had plenty of support behind Lee. Emily Odwin climbed into a tie for sixth at 6-under, using a sharp final round that featured a bogey-free back nine and four birdies.
Grace Jin made one of the biggest jumps of the day, firing a 5-under 67, her lowest round of the season, to finish tied for 10th.
There was more good news as well. Competing individually, Kirra St-Laurent posted the best finish of her college career by tying for 12th at 4-under.
Now the focus shifts to the ACC Championship in Wilmington, where SMU will try to carry this form into the postseason.
