That’s a big-time statement for an SMU team that outplayed a loaded field filled with ranked programs.
The Mustangs finished stroke play at 22-under, second only to top-ranked Stanford, and jumped past No. 10 Duke to secure one of the two coveted byes into the semifinals.
It was the kind of round that showed both depth and poise, two traits that could matter a lot in match play.
Head coach Lauren Mason praised the group’s mentality after the round.
“Really proud of the work this group has done to put us in this position,” Mason said. “Today we tied for the low round of the day, which says a lot about the focus and competitiveness of this team. As a coaching staff, we've believed in this group all along not just because of their talent, but because of how they show up for each other as teammates when no one is watching!”
Mackenzie Lee once again led the charge. The senior fired a bogey-free 67 to climb into fourth place individually at 8-under for the tournament.
It marked her second straight top-five finish, her 25th career top 10, and also included the 500th birdie of her career.
Emily Odwin was right there too, carding a 68 to finish tied for eighth at 5-under, good for her fifth top-10 result of the season.
Grace Jin added another strong week by finishing tied for 11th at 4-under, while Celine Chen and Kirra St-Laurent rounded out a lineup that looked steady from top to bottom.
Mason said, “Earning the No. 2 seed and the bye tomorrow morning is a great opportunity, and we're excited to compete for a spot in the championship.”
She added, “We're looking forward to the challenge and excited to see what opportunities tomorrow afternoon brings.”
Now SMU waits for the winner of Wake Forest and North Carolina, with a spot in the ACC title match on the line.
