Jennings has had a turnover problem for the past year, and quarterback coach D'Eriq King reveals how they go about fixing it.
One of the biggest knocks on SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings over the past 24 months has been his turnovers.
Having had 11 interceptions in 14 games back in 2024, Jennings was worse last season, throwing 13 interceptions in 13 games.
So, as good as Kevin is as a quarterback, all the numbers he puts up and the games he wins, there is still one area of his game that needs improving.
Many thought it would be this season, but five interceptions in the first four games, which saw Jennings throw multiple interceptions twice, had fans thinking the problem hasn't been fixed.
But against Boston College, Jennings played a clean game, and for his quarterback coach, D'Eriq King, he detailed how he and Kevin go about fixing the issue.
"It's not like I go in the meeting room and get on super hard, we try to learn from it," King said. "Playing quarterback, you going to have turnovers, especially with an offense like ours, so things are going to happen. What we try to hit on is you can't have the bad turnovers where I didn't see a safety, or I threw it right to a guy. Those are the ones that are unacceptable, right?
"So when we have those, that's when we correct it. He's been intentional in practice because it starts in practice. You got to do that stuff on Tuesday for it to translate to Saturday, right? So, he's been intentional about it. I think we'll clean it up moving forward."
And if we are being truthful, if the Mustangs want to have a successful season that hopefully sees them as part of the college football playoffs, then Jennings is going to need to reel in those pesky turnovers.
Because as good as this Mustangs offense is, it can't keep shooting itself in the foot with turnovers, because against better opposition, they will make SMU pay dearly.
So, correcting them now, especially with SMU on the bye, is the right plan of attack, as many feel that is one thing that could sink the Mustangs this season.
Clean up the turnovers, avoid the bad interceptions, and who knows how this season could play out for SMU.
