Green was a bit-part player for the Mustangs last season, but is he set to have an increased role in 2026?

Every offseason, the main goal is to improve on your game, and for SMU running back Dramekco Green, that is what he's been focused on.

Having been a bit-part player last season, with just 90 yards and one touchdown from 25 rushing attempts, Green knew that he needed to improve this offseason.

With Kendrick Raphael coming to the Mustangs from California after rushing for 943 yards and 13 TDs in 2025, Green has competition.

But competition can bring the best out of everyone, and for the young running back, when scouting his own camp this offseason, he's happy with how it's gone.

"It's been good," Green said. "From the spring, I wanted to get more used to the plays, more comfortable, so I could really just play like myself again, honestly. So for fall camp, it's been way better. I feel like I've been able to play more comfortable, like myself."

Having gotten some good work in this offseason, to Green's surprise, a lot of it has been with backup quarterback Ty Hawkins, not Kevin Jennings.

With Jennings getting his finger jammed in a door, he was out of practice for a while, which meant Hawkins had to step in.

For Green, he's liked what he has seen from the backup quarterback.

"With Kev having to sit out for a minute, I've seen that Ty stepped up into a role, he took a big part in our team, and he started to just fill that role like he needed to," Green added.

"He didn't crack under the pressure; he came in and did what he was supposed to do, stepped up how he's supposed to. He's being a leader, talking, communicating. So from him, I've seen a big improvement from just me knowing him coming in, and where his mind's been with the team."

So, it has been a productive offseason for both Green and Hawkins, as SMU's depth on offense appears to be in good order.

How much Green will play as Raphael's backup isn't known, and Mustang fans will hope Hawkins is only seen in cleanup duties late in games.

After his first season, Green appears ready to prove his worth in 2026.
