Ohrstrom comes to the Mustangs from Texas A&M, and the tight end knows how he's going to be productive on the field.
SMU tight end Theo Melin Ohrstrom is adjusting to life as a Mustang after transferring to Rhett Lashlee's team from Texas A&M.
Seen as the starting tight end for the Mustangs, for Ohrstrom to be a viable option in the passing game, he has to work on building chemistry with his teammates.
That has happened this offseason as he looks to be more of a pass-catching weapon than he was with Texas A&M (posted just 184 and 168 yards in last two seasons).
Still, it is never an easy thing to come into a new program and hit the ground running; it's about stacking days and developing wavelength with your quarterback, in Ohrstrom's case, Kevin Jennings.
And speaking with Run Peruna Run, Ohrstrom was asked about the importance of building chemistry with Jennings, and Theo gave an impressive answer.
"I think it's super important," Melin Ohrstrom said. "I think, especially as a tight end, you're not going to always be the guy that's just going to catch the go balls, and be the guy that just has the home run. You got to be the guy that the quarterback can trust when times get tough.
"He just needs to get the ball out, having somebody he can trust. I think having that chemistry is going to help both of us a lot in a lot of those situations. I think just having spent so much time with each other throughout the offseason since I've been here has been really good for us, and we've built a good relationship with each other off the field."
So Ohrstrom has worked well with Jennings this season, and while it isn't clear what his place is as far as being a pass catcher, surely it will see him far more involved than he was at A&M.
Given the Mustangs' system, we saw Matthew Hibner (436 yards, 4 TDs) and RJ Maryland (322 yards, 2 TDs) be used last season, so Ohrstrom can likely at least expect to see the ball coming his way often in 2026.
But for that to happen, chemistry has to be built, and going by his words, the relationship between him and Jennings is in a great place.
And Mustangs fans hope that will translate onto the field where Ohrstrom can develop into a legitimate weapon.
