On Saturday afternoon, we'll get our first glimpse of a new-look Stanford football program against a familiar foe in Hawaii.
Stanford football is back in action. After a long offseason and training camp, it all comes down to this — the opening game of the 2026 college football season. Once again, the Cardinal will face Hawaii to kick off the new campaign, but with a major chip on their shoulder.
In a new era highlighted by the addition of rookie head coach Tavita Pritchard, the Cardinal are ready to prove that they have what it takes to win now.
But no win comes easily, and after finishing 9-4 with a bowl win last season, Hawaii is itching for an even better campaign this year. Facing off on The Farm for the first time ever, this game is crucial for both teams and could be a tone setter for the rest of the season.
Stanford finished 4-8 in 2025 after going 3-9 each season from 2021–24, and is ready to contend for their first bowl game appearance since 2018. Facing a tough schedule, the Cardinal must take this season one week at a time.
The Cardinal are listed as the favorites against Hawaii on Saturday, but will need to play their best brand of football if they want to see that prediction come to life. Here is everything you need to know leading up to Stanford's opening matchup against Hawaii.

Players to Watch - Stanford
QB Davis Warren
Warren transferred to Stanford after multiple seasons at Michigan and joins the Cardinal with plenty of experience. As Michigan's primary quarterback in 2024, Warren started nine games and threw for 1,199 yards with seven touchdowns and nine interceptions. Warren is an upgrade for the Cardinal compared to recent seasons and the program is hoping that he can be the answer for the entire campaign.
Sam Roush left for the NFL after a stellar career on The Farm, leaving Blackburn as the main tight end option in 2026. Blackburn has had a limited role in two seasons at Stanford, but is ready to finally break out this year and become a core part of the offense. He caught nine passes for 109 yards and a touchdown in 2025, and with extensive knowledge of the offense, could help Warren ease into the system.
DB Brandon Nicholson
Nicholson has had a good start to his Stanford career, playing in all 12 games last season with six starts in place of the injured Collin Wright. In those 12 games, he performed very well and had 27 tackles to go along with two interceptions.
But now that Wright is in the NFL, Nicholson becomes the top cornerback for Stanford. With elite quarterbacks filling the ACC, he will be tested every game. Nicholson will use this season as an opportunity to really prove himself in college football.
Players to Watch - Hawaii
QB Micah Alejado
Alejado broke out last season in his first campaign as Hawaii's full-time starter, throwing for 3,106 yards with 24 touchdowns and nine interceptions en route to winning the Mountain West Freshman of the Year award.
Helping the program secure its first winning season since 2020, Alejado enters this season as the team's marquee player. Stanford's new-look defense will need to play its best game if it wants to keep Alejado from going off.
RB Cam Barfield
Barfield spent the first two seasons of his college career at Boston College, and after minimal opportunities, he transferred to Hawaii.
He broke out last season, running the ball 80 times for 371 yards and four touchdowns — the first touchdowns of his career. Barfield now enters 2026 as the unquestioned starter for the Rainbow Warriors and is hungry to take that next step and put his talents on full display.
DB Jeremiah Hughes
Hughes spent the last two seasons at Michigan State and joins Hawaii with a lot to prove. He's an experienced college football player who is expected to be a key starter for Hawaii's defense and could be tested early as he works to establish himself as a top defender.
Stanford's offense needs to prevent Hughes from getting too comfortable.
Score Prediction
Stanford 27, Hawaii 21
The Cardinal lost to the Rainbow Warriors on the road in heartbreaking fashion to begin last season, falling 23-20. But the new-look program is hungry to prove that they are ready to win now, and the game against Hawaii is their first opportunity to get revenge and get the season started on a high note.
For a rebuilding Stanford program, games like this are crucial. While Hawaii is more established, entering this year as a Mountain West favorite, the Cardinal will surely come out firing. With home field advantage this time around, this year's matchup has all the makings to go Stanford's way.
