Stanford needs six wins to reach a bowl game. With five games left, Friday's matchup with NC State is the one the Cardinal can least afford to lose.

Stanford sits at 3-4 after last week's win over Elon, and under NCAA rules, that victory over an FCS opponent still counts toward bowl eligibility — meaning the Cardinal need three more wins from their final five games to reach the six they need to qualify in their first season under Tavita Pritchard.

Friday's home game against NC State isn't just another ACC matchup. It's arguably the most important remaining game on the schedule, and not because of what either team has accomplished this year.

Look at what comes after it. The stretch Stanford faces the rest of the way includes games at No. 24 Louisville, on the road at Virginia Tech, on the road again for Big Game at Cal, and at home against a ranked SMU team.

Every one of those games presents a real obstacle — Louisville and SMU are both currently ranked, Cal has been competitive all season, and even a game against a rebuilding Virginia Tech program under new coach James Franklin is an ACC road game.

NC State, by comparison, is the softest matchup left on Stanford's calendar. If there's a game remaining on this schedule the Cardinal are favored to win, this is probably it. With kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. local time, the Cardinal may also be on the right side of the internal clock battle, as we saw against Georgia Tech.

That makes Friday close to a must-win in the truest sense. Losing to NC State wouldn't mathematically end Stanford's bowl hopes — the Cardinal could still theoretically win three of their final four against Louisville, Virginia Tech, Cal and SMU — but it would mean needing three wins against a strong slate of ranked and desperate opponents instead of two. Reaching that mark would be improbable.

Given how this season has gone, with Stanford 0-for-3 against ranked teams and getting outscored by a combined 115-10 in its two worst losses against Wake Forest and Notre Dame, limiting the number of wins needed against ranked teams the rest of the way would be prudent.

There's also a psychological dimension worth considering. Stanford just found its footing in the win over Elon, with Micah Ford validating his talent and Davis Warren turning in a clean, mistake-free game.

None of this is really about NC State itself, a 3-3 team that is coming off its own bye week and has had an uneven season of its own. It's about math, momentum and the shrinking margin for error in Stanford's first season under a new coaching staff.

Win Friday, and the Cardinal control their own bowl path with a reasonable number of needed, plausible outcomes. Lose, and bowl eligibility becomes something Stanford can still talk about, but can no longer really expect.
