As the Cardinal look to bounce back from a tumultuous 2025-26 season, a roster shake-up brings new faces and renewed expectations to The Farm.
Coming off of another down year where the Stanford women's basketball program missed the NCAA tournament for the second straight season, the Cardinal saw a massive roster exodus at the end of 2025-26 following allegations of a toxic environment within the program, leaving them in limbo as they looked to reestablish their identity.
And after a tireless offseason of rebuilding, the Cardinal appear to have their roster for the 2026-27 campaign set, revealing their full team for the upcoming season.
Headlined by the return of former five-star recruits Hailee Swain and Alexandra Eschmeyer, the Cardinal will rely heavily on their returning veterans to help the program figure out how the roster gels together. Overall, the Cardinal have 12 players currently on the roster, a smaller number than in years past. That leaves room for some potential late additions, but none are expected at this time.
Along with Swain and Eschmeyer, the other returning players include Kennedy Umeh, Shay Ijiwoye and Nora Ezike. While some of these players had smaller roles last season, the Cardinal will need players to step up and prove that despite major roster turnover, the program still has what it takes to return to being a tournament team.
But while a handful of players return, the theme of the season is change, with several new faces set to come to The Farm this fall.
Incoming freshmen Gracyn Gilliard, Jordyn Wheeler, Elyse Ngenda and Kiara Green round out the recruiting class, while the Cardinal are also adding transfers such as Inés Sotelo Míguez, Charlotte Tuhy and Ilse de Vries — meaning the lineup will look a lot different. The expectation is that the fresh crop of the new players can establish themselves as true superstars and help lead the program back to March Madness.
Since longtime assistant Kate Paye took over as the head coach ahead of the 2024-25 season, a once dominant Stanford program has yet to find its footing in the ACC, finishing with a losing record in conference play in each of their first two seasons in the new conference and looking like a shell of their former top-25 selves.
Set to face another tough slate of games, the urgency for the Cardinal to win is higher than it's been in at least four decades.
