Despite a staggering 26-4 shot advantage, the Cardinal surrendered two lightning-fast goals in a freak collapse, suffering a rare defeat when scoring twice under coach Jeremy Gunn.

The Cardinal outshot Virginia 26-4 on Friday night. None of it mattered once the Cavaliers scored twice in a two-minute span.

Stanford men's soccer controlled almost every meaningful number on the stat sheet Friday night at Cagan Stadium. Shots: 26-4. Shots on target: 9-1. Corner kicks: 12-0. None of it showed up on the scoreboard, where No. 6 Stanford fell 3-2 to Virginia after the Cavaliers scored in the 72nd and 74th minutes to erase a Cardinal lead and steal the result.

Head coach Jeremy Gunn had watched something like this happen only twice before in his time running the program. Stanford is now 129-3-16 under Gunn when scoring two or more goals in a match — and this was just the third such loss, the first since a 2021 defeat at Oregon State.

"We really dominated the game in so many departments other than the one that matters," Gunn said afterward. "So it's a disappointing result but such an encouraging performance."

Virginia struck first against the run of play in the 16th minute, a deflected shot off a Cardinal defender finding the net after a Cavaliers transition sequence. Stanford spent the rest of the half trying to answer, forcing five saves and four corner kicks, but went into the break down a goal anyway.

The second half started with a near-miss and then a breakthrough. Jack Pymm appeared to have tied it early, only to see his shot cleared off the line by a Virginia defender. Minutes later, Stanford earned a penalty when Dillon Logan was fouled in the box, and Pymm made no mistake this time, burying his fourth spot kick of the season to level the match.

Stanford took the lead in the 60th minute when Yujin Kikuchi ripped a right-footed shot into the top corner off a Timothy Fortier pass — the first collegiate goal of Kikuchi's career.

Then came the two minutes that decided the game. An inadvertent handball during a Virginia set piece in the 72nd minute gave the Cavaliers a penalty, which Marco Dos Santos converted to tie it.

Two minutes later, a Samuel Oulouheu free kick from a tight angle deflected awkwardly off a Cardinal player and found the net, putting Virginia ahead for good.

Stanford pushed for an equalizer until the final whistle — Alex Chow's late header was the closest it came — but the damage from those two minutes held up.

The loss drops Stanford to 7-2-1 overall and 0-2-1 in ACC play, a second straight defeat despite a shot advantage that would flatter most winning teams. The Cardinal get a week to regroup before heading back east, with a Friday matchup at Duke set for 4 p.m. PT on October 2.
