With key departures opening the door and a new coaching staff settling in, these five Cardinal players are poised to take the next step this fall.

In less than one week, the Stanford Cardinal will begin training camp and officially kick off preparations for the 2026 season. Coming off a 4-8 campaign last year, preceded by four straight 3-9 seasons, the Cardinal enter the season with urgency to win at an all-time high.

Ushering in a new era with the hiring of head coach and former Cardinal quarterback Tavita Pritchard, this Cardinal program is excited to see how everything comes together.

While the roster was revamped this offseason as well, with the program bringing in several new players via recruiting and the portal, there are players from recent seasons that will be relied upon heavily throughout the fall.

Set to embark on a grueling schedule, the Cardinal will need veteran experience to see any success. That means plenty of chances for players to break out and prove themselves in college football.

The Cardinal have several players that are on breakout watch this season. Most of them have already shown what they can do, but are now ready to take a big step forward thanks to a new opportunity or scheme. Here are the top breakout candidates for Stanford football.

RB Micah Ford

The one position that the Cardinal have had numerous options at in recent seasons is running back, where the program has put together a running back room with multiple starting-caliber players year after year.

Last season, the Cardinal's running back room consisted of Chris Davis Jr., Tuna Altahir, Sedrick Irvin, Cole Tabb and Ford, all players who have taken a fair share of carries in their college careers.

But Ford managed to separate himself from the pack last season, finishing with 145 carries for 643 yards and four touchdowns. He rushed for over 100 yards in two of the team's first three games. With Tabb — the other main rushing option (114 carries, 445 yards) — now transferred to Cincinnati, Ford will have as many carries as he can handle.

The Cardinal have not had a 1,000-yard rusher since Bryce Love in 2017, but Ford could break that trend this season if he continues on his current trajectory.

DB Brandon Nicholson

Throughout his first two seasons on The Farm, Nicholson showed tremendous promise, finishing his freshman season with 31 tackles and an interception in eight games. He also played very well when Collin Wright was injured for part of last season, intercepting two passes in one game.

But now that Wright has departed for the NFL, Nicholson is the main cornerback on The Farm and has the opportunity to truly prove himself this season.

In defensive coordinator Kris Richard's scheme, defensive backs play a pivotal role, needing to display extreme toughness, physicality and a high football IQ to be successful. Already a talented player, Nicholson has the type of season ahead of him to really show what he's made of.

DB Jay Green

One of the more seasoned veterans that the Cardinal have this season, Green is entering year three on The Farm and is ready to be a top player on the defense. Missing the final eight games of his first season at Stanford due to a knee injury, Green came back and played 10 games in 2025 while recording a career high of 38 tackles.

But Green cemented himself as a Stanford legend during Big Game when he recorded a fumble recovery for a touchdown while Andrew Luck was being interviewed on the field.

Now, in what is likely to be his final season of college football, Green is looking to put together another good season so that he not only ends his career on a high note, but potentially makes his case to be an NFL prospect for next year's draft. With all those factors at stake, Green could have a big year.

TE Benji Blackburn

For two years, Blackburn was limited to a supporting role with Sam Roush locked in as Stanford's starting tight end. Blackburn has caught only 11 passes for 127 yards and a touchdown in his first two seasons with the Cardinal.

But now that Roush is in the NFL, the starting job is ready for Blackburn to take hold of. Despite his smaller sample size, there is no reason to think Blackburn won't start.

Given how big of a role Stanford's tight ends have played in the past, earning the moniker "Tight End U," expect this year to be no different. A strong blocker and pass catcher, Blackburn's skillset fits in perfectly with head coach Tavita Pritchard's scheme. When given the opportunity, he will be ready to make big plays.

WR JonAnthony Hall

A former four-star recruit, Hall entered the 2025 season with high hopes, with expectations for him to play a pivotal role for the offense. But after appearing in only one game, without recording a stat, Hall suffered an injury and missed the rest of the season.

Back and healthy this season, Hall will look to make up for lost time and prove that the Cardinal made a good choice in investing in him.

The Cardinal's receiver room looks vastly different from last season, but there remain plenty of opportunities for Hall to cement his role with the program and potentially even become a headlining player in the process.
