SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Syracuse University men's basketball team suffered its first home loss of the season on Saturday night, dropping a 70-69 decision against visiting Hofstra at the JMA Wireless Dome.
For Syracuse, the loss snapped a modest two-game win streak. They are now 6-4 on the season, and this was the programs first home loss of the campaign. The Pride moved to 8-4 with the win. This was their second win against an ACC opponent inside a week, as they also beat Pittsburgh.
Here's what you need to know.
Trailing 70-69 with just over 10 seconds left, Orange freshman Kiyan Anthony drove right looking to win the game. As he drove toward the baseline, the ball was knocked away. However, it looked as if the Hofstra defender smacked his arm. The play is shown in the video player above, with the instant replay included.
That wasn't the only questionable call of the afternoon, as both sides were upset at various points.
--Syracuse shot 46 from the floor and 35 percent from three-point range.
--Hofstra shot 49 percent from the floor and a whopping 67 percent from three-point range (12-of-18).
--Syracuse, the worst free-throw shooting team in the nation, went 9-of-16 at the line (56 percent). However, it should be noted that William Kyle III hit two crucial free-throws to put the Orange up 68-67 with a minute to play. Hofstra hit a big three moments later to take a 70-68 lead. Sadiq White Jr. then went 1-of-2 at the line later to bring us to our final margin.
--Syracuse had nine turnovers versus 10 for the Pride.
--Five Orange players were in double-figures including JJ Starling (15), Kyle (13), Anthony (12), White (12) and Nate Kingz (12).
--Cruz Davis has 22 points to lead the Pride.
Anthony looked more comfortable offensively in this game, going 5-for-11 from the floor in 24 minutes. He was also on the court routinely down the stretch, indicating some nice trust from the coaching staff.
The Orange need to get more consistent in the half-court offense. Much of Syracuse's best offense is derived from its defense allowing it to get out in transition, but with Hofstra shooting well, the Orange were forced into a standstill offense most of the afternoon, which they are not built for.
Syracuse will host Mercyhurst on Dec. 17 at 7 p.m. ET.
